Berry's Own Selection, Port Ellen 1982 (Scotland)
Port Ellen distillery is located close to Islay’s southern ferry port of the same name, and was closed in 1983, though its highly regarded make is now much sought after by connoisseurs. Sherry and maple syrup dominate the early nose, with peat, salt and gummy notes developing later. The palate is vast and moth-coating, with Sherry, stewed fruits, liquorice and smoke. The finish is very long, with peat smoke, Crunchie bars, fennel and a whiff of antiseptic. An operating theatre beside the sea. Massive and complex, this is an inspiring after-dinner Islay. Available from late April 2007. This whisky was a Whisky of the Month. 55.6% ABV, 70cl, £95.00, Berry Bros & Rudd, specialist whisky merchants.
